How to Select the Right Astrologer for You

Take Your TIME

Selecting the right astrologer for your needs can make a huge difference in your experience, the interpretation of your chart, and any insight you receive. I highly recommend researching each astrologer or astrologist you are considering on working with to ensure they are a good fit for you.

Look around as long as you need until you feel comfortable with the right person.

The right astrologer for you will give you valuable insight and often develops into a long-term professional relationship that can last years. We often don’t need astrological guidance more than a check-in here or there for most stages of life, but it’s powerful to know you have someone you trust and respect on your side that you can reach out to when you need them.

I cherish the relationships I’ve had with mentors and colleagues over the years. Their wisdom has been worth every penny I paid!

Almost all astrologers have at least one annual consultation with another professional to avoid bias in our own readings. In other words, we check in with each other to makes sure we’re not just seeing what we want to in our own charts!

How I Select My Own Astrologers and Mentors

When I’m selecting an astrologer (or astrologist) to work with, I check out their social media. Often this will give you some insight into the areas they work with, their interests and passions in the field, and their delivery style. You’ll get a great sense of their personality. If you can’t picture yourself having a good heart-to-heart talk with them in person over a cup of coffee… they’re probably not the right match for you.

Next, I will follow their social media channels, watch any free live events they have, and/or follow their newsletter. This gives me a feel not only for what they would be like to work with, but also the depth and breadth of their knowledge.

Red Flags (for Both Astrologers and Clients)

I would be concerned by someone who:

  • does not have professional boundaries
  • did not fulfill their existing obligations
  • delayed in providing a paid for service (especially without communication on why)
  • treated me (or others) with rudeness or cruelty
  • made sexual or romantic advances towards clients or in the community
  • promised more than they could deliver
  • demonstrated they lacked mastery of the material specific to the service you are paying them for
  • crosses physical boundaries
  • crosses emotional or psychological boundaries set by either party
  • does something else unethical or illegal
  • makes you feel otherwise uncomfortable

If any of these arise, either while you are scouting for your astrologer or during a reading, it’s time to look elsewhere.

Additionally, for students and practitioners:

  • it’s okay to terminate a client-astrologer relationship if the above happen in reverse
  • if the client attempts to get free readings (that you did not offer to them) from you–especially if this behavior repeats
  • if a client does not respect your time, expertise, and energy that go into your craft
    • ex. repeated behavior of the same questions expecting a different answer
    • ex. constantly emailing or texting, hoping for further readings for free (or at strange non-business hours)

The clients that are meant to work with you will find you. The astrologer meant to work with you will find you.

The longer you work with astrology, the more you experience this truth. Protect emotional and psychological health–for both parties.

A Note on Specializations in Astrology

Astrology is a layered practice. There are so many specializations and schools of thought an interest–we never stop learning! We are always discovering new patterns and learning from one another.

I would recommend finding someone that offers readings in as many of the aspects as you are interested in. If you are new to astrology, you’re probably looking for someone who can read a natal chart (your birth chart), transits (how the current sky affects you today), and synastry (relationship compatibility). Luckily, almost all of us master those early on in our studies!

If you are looking for something special… join astrology groups on social media to learn more and ask general questions. The community often guides you to the person you’re looking for. For example, not many astrologers work with astrocartography and relocation. You might need a diligent search to find the right person. Others may focus on people, and don’t have much interest in astrology for business. Others specialize entirely in historical events and predicting elections and global changes.

How the Professional Astrologer-Client Relationship Should Feel

It’s important that you feel safe, supported, and heard by your astrologer. You want to find someone who feels approachable as much as knowledgeable, as it’s not uncommon for hard topics to come up. You want someone you trust to tell you the truth with kindness, who wants to help you find a solution to any obstacles regarding your issue.

The astrologer you select should be able to tailor the language of their reading to your level for clarity and understanding. For example, if you are new to astrology, they should be able to present what they are seeing without the professional jargon and check for your understanding.

It’s also important that you respect their expertise–that if they give you a warning about an obstacle or that the answer is “no”, you heed their advice and consider their insight with careful reflection. (Quite honestly, if you think the astrologer is lying to you or you don’t intend to take their insight into consideration, why are you paying for the service?)

In Conclusion

Make sure you both LIKE the astrologer AND they have the expertise you seek.

This creates a winning combination and the foundation for a long-lasting relationship if you choose to check in with them annually or quarterly (or however often you like).

It’s always okay to try someone new if you don’t click! A great astrologer will be happy that you are taking the time to build the right professional contact and relationship that helps you with your personal goals and life path. We know from experience that what is meant to be arrives when it should, and what is not meant for us (or no longer meant for us) naturally moves on to open both indivdual’s paths.

Also, one astrologer may not be specialized in a type of reading you seek. A good astrologer will give you a referral to someone who practices in that area, or at least will direct you to a group for recommendation or keywords to Google yourself.

I wish you luck and joy on this amazing and powerful journey! It will open doors you never knew existed and teach you more about yourself than you ever dreamed.
